Heather Berg is a South Florida-based yoga instructor and deliciously loving and intuitive human who’s been to Campowerment on both Coasts and is back to join us Sept 2018 to lead yoga and Stand Up Paddleboard yoga. She inspires us, so we’re connecting her to YOU, with a look into the ins-and-outs of her day-to-day, starting with daybreak.

CAMPOWERMENT (CP): How do you kick-start your morning?

HEATHER: I set my alarm for 5:10 am, but my body usually wakes me up just before that. Then the first thing I do in the morning is oil-pulling.

CP: What’s your body hungry for at 5 a.m.?

HEATHER: I don’t usually eat until around 9, but I make my breakfast ahead of time and bring it with me.  My go-to: chia pudding with nuts, hemp seeds and berries— it’s quick to throw together, I usually have all the ingredients in my house, and it’s super filling and healthy! Plus, coffee: Black. Usually one large mug, but on those snooze days, I’m more apt to have a second mug.

CP: What’s one thing you do each morning that sets your day up for success? How do you get movin’?

HEATHER: Meditation with breathwork. It’s non-negotiable. It sets the stage for my day, even if I can only sit for 5 minutes.

I have 30-40 minute yoga practice every day. Some days it’s more yin yoga (holding poses anywhere from 3-5 minutes, with attention to breath) and some days I covet moving more, so I practice a slow vinyasa. A few days a week I escape to a tiny local studio, Keshava Rhada Yoga, I found that not many people know about.

I also try to get more cardio in (walking by the beach or around my neighborhood) 3 days a week. One of those days I try to meet a friend so it allows us to catch up while getting some exercise in.

(Efficiency: we dig!)

CP: Best advice for someone trying to start their day on the right side of the bunk bed?

HEATHER: It’s all about your mindset. If you wake up in a bad mood, catch yourself IMMEDIATELY, change the dialogue, breathe, and sit. Stillness does wonders for starting the day.
